Max Cullen brings his one man show “Faces in the street – a Salute to Henry Lawson” to Eskbank House and Museum in Lithgow. His art exhibition “Balmy Harry” accompanies it.
Max Cullen is regarded as a living legend, the esteemed elder statesman of stage and screen, and celebrated artist (also born in the Central West). From humble beginnings, Lawson became one of our best known and best loved poets and story tellers. But how well do we really know him? Suffering from deafness and possibly bi-polar disorder, as well as alcoholism, the bush poet and political radical we think we know, had a dark side that included madness, addiction, separation and loss.
His exhibition titled “ Balmy Harry” consisting of some of the portraits done by Cullen over the years, inspired by Lawson and the work of the great masters.
The official launch of the exhibition will begin at 5pm on Friday 10 February 2012 at Eskbank House and Museum. Max will be available to meet guests and to sign copies of his memoir “Tell ‘em nothing. Take ‘em nowhere” (published by Pan McMillan). Copies of this book can be ordered at A Reader’s Heaven at 35 Main Street, Lithgow. Orders must be placed before 1 February in order to ensure arrival by the 10 February 2012.
Don’t miss this opportunity to meet an Australian Icon, Max Cullen and to experience this enlightening play and exhibition about one of Australia’s best loved sons, Henry Lawson.

The concept for Skillset’s sustainability skills centre was conceived in 2009, and since that time environmental issues have become increasingly prevalent.
Named after Tim Flannery - renowned environmental advocate and 2007 Australian of the Year, the Flannery Centre will deliver the range of sustainability training and education required to function in these difficult times.
As governments respond to the call from the community to act, the Flannery Centre will be a model of community response to urgent global issues.
The Flannery Centre officially opens May this year.
Art Exhibition
In celebration of the Flannery Centre’s official opening, artists across Australia are invited to create a piece of artwork that responds to the following statement:
Humanity is now living in ways which outstrip the capacity of Earth of the earth to provide an equitable, healthy lifestyle for future generations.
With 7 billion people a number of planetary boundaries have been reached which will drive fundamental changes to the way we live and work.
The statement above is the driving force
behind the building of the Flannery Centre.
This artwork can take any (permanent) form and
be designed for an indoor or outdoor space. Artists are also asked to write a short (300 word max) explanation to accompany their work.
The winning artwork will become a part of the
Flannery Centre space and help to pass these ideals on to all those who use the building.
Our vision is for life to thrive on a finite planet.
Our mission is to inspire, lead and learn our way to a positive future.

Music Classes
Music - Class
Throughout the week Venue: Mitchell Conservatorium of Music, Bathurst, BATHURST
Mitchell Conservatorium's Early Childhood Music classes are a wonderful introduction to the world of music for children.
Classes for three, four and five year old children build very gradually on previous activities. Children find their musical voice and move closer to becoming independent of parents, growing in their self-esteem and self-confidence. With a selection of new songs, children gain an understanding of beat, rhythm, pitch, tone, colour and dynamics. Playing a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments provide further stimulus to children’s coordination skills, and musical awareness in small group settings.
At the pre-instrumental stage, six and seven year old classes begin activities in simple music reading and writing. Pitch and rhythm patterns are based on well known songs for this age. Recorder, keyboard and other tuned percussion instruments encourage children to read, write and play many styles of music and to explore or create their own musical ideas before proceeding to more formal instrumental tuition.
Early Childhood Tryouts allow kids to try a different instrument each week (5-9 years).
Ensembles are available in most instruments.

Storytime

Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays promptly at 11am (during school term) Venue: Orange City Library, ORANGE
Storytime for children aged 3 to 5 years.
Storytime continues to be a fun way to encourage an interest in books, reading and learning.
Parents and carers are welcome to bring along their children to any of the Storytime sessions during the week but don't forget to book your place first by phoning 6393 8132 or call into the Library. Bookings are taken a week before each Storytime session.
Free Storytime sessions are held during school terms on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays promptly at 11am and there is also a session on Thursday afternoons at 2pm.
Each session goes for about 45 minutes. The same stories and craft are usually repeated during the week, so it doesn't matter which day you come along.
And here's a tip - it's a good idea to familiarise your child with the Library before bringing them to Storytime.
We also ask everyone to turn off mobile phones, to stop talking while the story is being read aloud to the children, to join in and encourage your child to participate when asked and if your child is restless, crying or disruptive, please consider others and leave the Storytime area.
These simple tips make Storytime enjoyable for everyone. And we'd like to thank everyone to doing their bit - it really helps. See you there!

Age of Fishes Museum
Heritage/Museums - Exhibition
Open hours are 10am to 4pm 7 days
Including most Public Holidays. Venue: Age of Fishes Museum, CANOWINDRA
Imagine a world ruled by fish! Long before the dinosaurs the mighty rivers of the Central West teamed with bizarre ancient fishes - fish with armour shells, fish with lungs, and huge predators with jaws like crocodiles. Thousands of their fossils were found at Canowindra and give us a unique glimpse into life during the Devonian Period - the 'Age of Fishes'.
A chance discovery in 1955 revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period. This 360 million year old formation contained the fossilised remains of over 3500 freshwater fish. Many were new to science. This unique fossil collection is now on public display in the township of Canowindra, only a short distance from the discovery location.
The Museum displays many of these beautiful fossils together with live aquarium displays and wonderful recreations of life in the Devonian.
