A famous Anthony Symons sculpture is just one artwork on show as part of the “Gawimarra Yadhaa; a gathering of dreams” - a new public exhibition of Indigenous Australian art works at TAFE Western’s Lithgow College. The exhibition includes a range of other art works by local indigenous people, as well as a large selection of Koori library books and DVDs for loan. Local residents, TAFE staff and students are invited to attend the launch of the exhibition on Wednesday, 29 February between 4.30-7.00pm when artists will be available to speak about their work.
The bronze model sculpture by Anthony Symons called ‘Dancing with Strangers’ consists of seven bronze indigenous figures, in traditional active occupations, fastened to a circular table. Anthony is well known locally for creating the Marjorie Jackson [known locally as the Lithgow Flash] sculpture in Lithgow’s Cook Plaza.
The ‘Dancing with Strangers’ sculpture was commissioned by a Sydney Indigenous Diggers group who are so pleased with this model that they are petitioning the NSW government to have it recast 2 metres high for either Circular Quay or Hyde Park.
The art works which adorn the library’s walls are by Jason Horne, a student at Lithgow College and Bob Sutor, an Aboriginal art teacher at Lithgow College. Bob will conduct a Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony at the Exhibition Opening, and play indigenous music while Ana Carter sings. The works are for sale from the artists.

Light, Life and Perspective by Joel Tonks
Visual Arts - Exhibition
4 May - 3 June. Wed-Sun 10 am - 4 pm
Exhibition opens: Friday 4 May at 6pm Venue: Jayes Gallery, MOLONG
Joel tells about his show: "I grew up amongst a family of artists, with my mother, father and grandfather all actively creating art throughout my childhood. It was perhaps these influences that taught me to find beauty and detail in ordinary places. Having grown up in Orange NSW, I was always inspired by the extreme changes in colour and climate of the surrounding landscape. I began painting at 14, mostly depicting these vibrant local landscapes. In my recent artwork, I try to push the boundaries of traditional realism and depict narratives through unusual perspectives. Since moving to the coast to study, I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of free time to travel and go on adventures, with my artwork often becoming a reflection of my experiences. I don't always seek ideas for artworks; rather they hit me all at once and won't leave me alone until put them down. Creating artworks is my way of expressing feelings and experiences that I cannot put to words. I don' fully understand why I paint, but there'something immensely satisfying about putting the final touches and standing back to see what you'e created. The need to create art is best described by William Faulkner, as an artist is a creature driven by demons. He doesn't know why they chose him and he's usually too busy to wonder why. UNEARTHED by Trevor Hood
Visual Arts - Exhibition
4 May - 3 June
Wednesday through to Sunday, 10am-4pm Venue: Jayes Gallery, MOLONG
Large abstract and expressive works from Trevor Hood.
Trevor Hood asks us, “Mostly the world goes unnoticed. Do we notice below the surface? Do we look longer than the fleeting moment? Either we don't know what to look at or we fail to understand its importance and miss the opportunity to look at all. Much that we see is on our periphery and fails to register in any meaningful way. Sometimes we see phantoms, but what we see is only ever a slice of what can be considered real. No two people understand the world in the same way and no two people look, think or imagine alike. Beach, Bush + Battlers: Photographs by Jeff Carter
Photography - Exhibition
Friday 11 May- Tuesday 5 June 2012
Opening Friday May 11, 6pm Venue: Condobolin Community Centre, CONDOBOLIN
A travelling exhibition from the State Library of NSW
For 60 years larrikin Australian photojournalist Jeff Carter (1928-2010)
criss-crossed Australia in search of stories.
Over 40 of Jeff Carter’s most enduring and iconic images of everyday Australians in rural, outback, urban and coastal regions from the State Library of NSW will feature in an exhibition opening at the Condobolin Community Centre , from 11 May - 5 June 2012.
Beach, Bush + Battlers: Photographs by Jeff Carter showcases evocative and engaging b&w images of weathered bush folk and the working class, city dwellers, beachcombers and surfers, ranging in date from the 1940s to 1996.
“Photographer Jeff Carter has documented and celebrated the lives of ‘ordinary’ people at work and play,” says Library manager, Sharon Denyer. “You can see in his images that he had a genuine admiration and respect for his subjects.”
Working as a full-time photojournalist from the mid 1950s, Jeff published his images and stories in the major local and international magazines of the day, such as Picture, encouraging an appreciation of the difficulties faced by many Australians everyday.
Best known for his work in country and regional Australia, Carter was also a great photographer of inner city and beach life who became involved in the surfing scene.
His beach images document the transition from long boards to the Malibu, the birth of the bikini in the late 1950s, to changes in menus at the local kiosk.
Carter’s remarkable photographic archive of 50,000 works is considered among the nation’s most historically important, capturing the changing face of our nation. Significantly, he wrote and illustrated 20 books and produced Wild Country, an award-winning television series on Australia which was sold around the world.
“Jeff was out there photographing the people and places others weren’t interested in and, as a nation, we’ve got a lot to be grateful to Jeff for,” says Alan Davies, State Library Curator of Photographs, who acquired the 100 images, personally printed and signed by Carter, for the State Library’s collection.
Inland Heart, a new film about Carter’s life and work by award-winning documentary
filmmaker Catherine Hunter, will be shown as part of the exhibition.
Beach, Bush + Battlers: Photographs by Jeff Carter is a free exhibition at Condobolin Community Centre from Friday 11th May to Tuesday 5th June 2012.

Would I? … Could I? …
Colours, shapes, line, darks, Lights.
Once standing on a hill
Looking out across the plains
I saw an ever-changing array of colours
That seemed to glow and shimmer,
From deep purples, crimson reds,
Oranges that turned gold,
To yellows, blues, iridescent
In their changing hues of darks and lights.
And that wonderful sense
That these colours are bouncing off the earth,
The sheer clarity of the earth.
Words can’t describe the feeling of exhilaration it gives,
Seen through the gaps of land and sky.
Colours of Australia?
What I see in nature?

This exhibition is designed to increase community awareness of issues around male-only cancers, specifically testicular and prostate cancer. The exhibition will have both creative and educational components involving community groups and individuals (particularly males) without geographical restriction. The creative component will consist of displays and the sale of visual arts items in multi-media; the educational component will be provided by relevant groups such as the Cancer Council, Orange Prostate Support Group and Lifeline.

Music Classes
Music - Class
Throughout the week Venue: Mitchell Conservatorium of Music, Bathurst, BATHURST
Mitchell Conservatorium's Early Childhood Music classes are a wonderful introduction to the world of music for children.
Classes for three, four and five year old children build very gradually on previous activities. Children find their musical voice and move closer to becoming independent of parents, growing in their self-esteem and self-confidence. With a selection of new songs, children gain an understanding of beat, rhythm, pitch, tone, colour and dynamics. Playing a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments provide further stimulus to children’s coordination skills, and musical awareness in small group settings.
At the pre-instrumental stage, six and seven year old classes begin activities in simple music reading and writing. Pitch and rhythm patterns are based on well known songs for this age. Recorder, keyboard and other tuned percussion instruments encourage children to read, write and play many styles of music and to explore or create their own musical ideas before proceeding to more formal instrumental tuition.
Early Childhood Tryouts allow kids to try a different instrument each week (5-9 years).
Ensembles are available in most instruments.

Art Conversations 2012
Visual Arts - Lecture/talk
Sessions are held weekly on Fridays at 1pm Venue: Bloomfield Campus, Orange Health Service, ORANGE
Orange Health Service is presenting a series of weekly Art Conversations in 2012
A growing body of evidence suggests that art can contribute significantly to a sense of wellbeing and aids in recovery by humanising and bringing warmth to what can otherwise be a sterile setting.
The display of artworks at Orange Health Service is providing access to high quality art for staff, volunteers and the general public while adding colour and interest to the health care environment.
Staff, visitors and volunteers are invited to participate in hour-long educational sessions designed to increase awareness of the art on display at the Orange Health Service, facilitate meaningful engagement with works of art and encourage discussion around personal interpretations.
Participants will experience an extensive loan of paintings, drawings and graphics from the Orange Regional Gallery’s permanent collection [the first time a major public collection has been installed in a health care setting in Australia] as well as award-winning community art projects situated around the Health Service such as the Weaving Wellbeing Project in the Cafeteria courtyard.
Arts educators and guest artists will present sessions through which participants will discover:
Slow looking
The art of looking deeply and mindfully at original artworks.
Describing
Using formal aspects of art such as line, colour, materials and technique as the basis for discussion. This is a great way to deepen our experience of art and participants will be given techniques that will be useful in any future experience of art. No previous experience is necessary.
Interpreting
Many participants find this a fascinating aspect of group art discussions. Explore how we each bring our own meaning and understanding to art. Discover what colleagues and friends experience through the same artworks. See how art can be a meaningful and personal experience. Learn about the vision of the artists.
Connecting
Relating aspects of artworks to personal life experiences, cultural values and world events.
Please note: participants do not need prior experience of art or art-making and will be encouraged to share their interpretations.

Age of Fishes Museum
Heritage/Museums - Exhibition
Open hours are 10am to 4pm 7 days
Including most Public Holidays. Venue: Age of Fishes Museum, CANOWINDRA
Imagine a world ruled by fish! Long before the dinosaurs the mighty rivers of the Central West teamed with bizarre ancient fishes - fish with armour shells, fish with lungs, and huge predators with jaws like crocodiles. Thousands of their fossils were found at Canowindra and give us a unique glimpse into life during the Devonian Period - the 'Age of Fishes'.
A chance discovery in 1955 revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period. This 360 million year old formation contained the fossilised remains of over 3500 freshwater fish. Many were new to science. This unique fossil collection is now on public display in the township of Canowindra, only a short distance from the discovery location.
The Museum displays many of these beautiful fossils together with live aquarium displays and wonderful recreations of life in the Devonian.

Make and learn to play the Irish Bodhrán
Craft - Workshop
Over 3 days (do not have to be consecutive). By appointment. Venue: Molong, MOLONG
with Geoff Tonkin
As well as making your own bodhrán, you will also be taught simple rhythmic styles and begin to enjoy the pleasures of confidently playing with others.
You will have the choice of making a 16” or 18” drum. This is formed and glued in a jig with wooden bending ply and sanded to a smooth finish. You can choose your own finish, natural or stained which is then oiled. An authentic skin is stretched over the ring and attached. Finishing touches such as a band, stud and a handle are added. You may also make a range of beaters. More competent students will have the opportunity to build a tuneable drum which involves fitting blocks and a small ring inside the main ring before fitting the skin.
Extra drums will be available to start learning basic rhythm patterns and techniques whilst the glue dries after each process. Geoff will provide live music whilst you learn, starting off slowly and building up speed and confidence. No previous woodworking experience is required but be sure (to be sure) to bring along your sense of rhythm. Only hand tools are used in construction. Class sizes one to four.
Total cost $350 over 3 days these days don’t have to be consecutive
About the Tutor
Geoff Tonkin’s musical career began 36 years ago with the gift of a guitar and his fascination in learning to play all sorts of instruments has never ceased. In 1981 he was a founding member of the popular NSW Central West bush band, ‘November Shorn’, which after 30 years still delights audiences from Bathurst to Bourke. In the group, Geoff plays button accordions, harmonica, tin whistle, didgeridoo, bodhrán and lagerphone as well as singing and calling the dances. As a recent graduate of the Sturt School for Wood, he is now exploring the fascinating world of instrument making. This includes harp making at Harps and Harps in Gosford and guitar making with Gilet Guitars in Botany, Sydney. These days Geoff works as a freelance furniture maker / instrument maker and musician near Molong in Central Western NSW
