Cootes Access Centre

Cootes Access Centre in Glenroi, a suburb of Orange, is a facility funded by the Department of Housing for the people of the Glenroi area. The CEO, Jon Ploughman, has great vision for this Housing Department area which has not enjoyed good publicity due to vandalism and violence. Jon's dream is to make the Cootes Access Centre a safe haven where people can come and participate in various activities that will enhance their lives. The art workshops, which were held on a Wednesday for 10 weeks , were a very successful part of this vision. The people that chose to come had not painted before and by the end of the series of workshops some stunning work was being produced. They all felt very proud of what they had achieved.

Michael and John at their first art workshop. Lesley with her first work at the workshop     We had a visit from Rev Bill Crews who was very interested in what we were doing at Cootes. Bill Crews works for homeless people in the Ashfield area in Sydney and he knew Jon, the CEO of Cootes and his wife, Trish, many years ago. Bill was very impressed with the work Jon and Trish are doing in the Glenroi area and Jon attributes it to the help Bill gave him when he needed it.
