Art and Alzheimers Program with the National Gallery of Australia

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery with Arts OutWest’s Arts and Health Program have linked into the National Gallery of Australia Alzheimer’s Outreach Program.

A professional development day, explaining the NGA model to arts and health workers and carers, was held at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) on the 18 and 19 May, 2011.

“The outreach training course was inspirational,” says Arts and Health Coordinator Christine McMillan.
Arts and health workers and carers were given an insight into how to manage and interact with a person with dementia to maximize their opportunity to communicate through engagement with the visual arts. This was provided through information, demonstration and practical activities. A focus
on the use of non verbal communication, the importance of a caring attitude and ways of talking and presenting to a person with dementia was invaluable.

This opportunity to learn how to design and present a program has enthused Bathurst Regional Art Gallery to plan an Art and Alzheimers program. The outreach program has created useful contacts both at a personal level, with arts and health workers and at an organisational level, with BRAG staff
and staff representing residential and non residential care facilities.
