Arts and disability partnership forums

In late 2008 and early 2009 Arts OutWest, with funding from the Australia Council for the Arts Community Partnerships, ran forums in Wellington, Cowra, Lithgow and Forbes that brought together people from the arts and the disability services sector. The forums, facilitated by Cate McCarthy, were to explore potential partnerships between arts and disability services in the region.

In 2008 Arts OutWest assisted Accessible Arts NSW to host a region-wide arts and disability forum in Orange. This was one of a number of forums held across the state. Outcomes of the day were documented by Accessible Arts and can be found on their website.

Celebrate Ability 2006

The 2006 Celebrate Ability program focused on the creative arts development of people with intellectual, physical and mental disabilities within the Central West. The program was delivered in three ways:  through weekly and intensive workshops, through the development of a webpage and through celebrating the achievements in special exhibitions to be held in regional public and private galleries and during special festivals including the Awakenings Festival in Victoria, International Day of People with a Disability and Mental Health Week among others.

Workshops were fan by local artists with Blayney Daycare, Cootes Access Centre (Orange), The Weigelli Centre at Woodstock and Cowra brain Injury Group. Special day-long events were held as part of the International Day of People with a Disability in Bathurst and Blayney.

A project of the workshops was the ‘Big Brain’, a large Hebel block sculpture designed by artist Ken Hutchinson and the Central West Brain Injury Group, of the human brain. ‘The Big Brain’ was one of the artworks that then went to be exhibited at the Awakenings Festival in Horsham, Victoria.

The 2006 Celebrate Ability project was funded by the Regional Arts Fund and Country Energy.
