New position: Central West Aboriginal Arts Development Officer

Arts OutWest has secured funding from DEWHA for a new full-time position of Central West Aboriginal Arts Development Officer to work across the communities in the Central West and Orana regions.

One of the really inspiring projects of ArtStart 2009 was the work done at Oberon High School with Veritas House and Desert Pea Media. All year nine students were involved in the project - the outcome being a very savvy hip hop song and film clip. Founder of Renew Newcastle, Marucs Westbury, was in Bathurst at the end of November to talk about the Renew Newcastle project and how something similar might work in parts of the Cenrtal West. There have been lots of enquiries from those at the talk and those who couldn't make it for more information on these ideas. Marcus has condensed his tips into a blog for the ABC. Regional Arts Australia extend an open invitation to a community consultation session in Bathurst on June 30, 2009. One of two sessions in NSW, this consulation will explore the role of arts and culture for regional Australians and consider how the arts intersect with areas such as health, toursim, technology, environment, education, indigenous culture and economic development. Zoe Rodwell has been appointed Coordinator of the 2009 ArtStart youth arts and skills program in the Central West. Zoe, who has a background in youth work and theatre projects, will work with councils, youth organisations and arts practitioners to build a menu of vocational arts workshops for 12-24 year olds. Arts OutWest has appointed Ms Tracey Callinan as its new Executive Officer. Ms Callinan (above) has just returned to Australia from a four year stay in the UK working for Arts Council England, where she worked on their national arts and education program Creative Partnerships as a Creative Programmer and then as a Creative Director. Central West councils will receive $5.5 million, from a national pool of $250 million, from the Federal Government under the 2008 Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP). Arts OutWest and other cultural groups are encoryaging councils to think of cultural infrastructure in spending the money. Read the media release...

The Bathurst Art and Health Program was officially launched on Tuesday September 9, 2008 by The Hon Bob Debus (above left). Local school students (above right) have donated artworks to the health service as part of a program that includes visual artworks, major public art, performances and workshops. Read more...
